Sega releases the Dreamcast console

The Sega Dreamcast is a video game console released by Sega.

The Dreamcast was based around a Hitachi SH-4 32-bit CPU running at 200MHz and an NEC PowerVR2 GPU. It had a 12x speed GD-ROM drive, and produced 640 x 480 resolution output with up to 16.77 million colors.

Sega released the Dreamcast in Japan on 27nd November 1998, then North America on 9th September 1999, and Europe on 14th October 1999.

Dreamcast sales were positive at launch, but when Sony announced the PlayStation 2, sales of the Dreamcast plummeted. The Dreamcast was discontinued in March 2001, and marked Sega's withdrawal from the console hardware industry.
